The Roots of International Women’s Day and Our Collective Journey Ahead
Every day, we aim to cherish and celebrate the women in our lives – mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, friends, and colleagues.
Yet, as March 8th approaches, our celebrations intensify. We find ourselves inspired by the hardworking women around us, acknowledging their recent successes and honouring the legacies of those who fought for the rights we enjoy today.
The origins of International Women’s Day are anchored in the movements for women’s rights of the early 20th century. In 1908, women garment workers in New York City rallied to demand fair working conditions, equitable pay, and the right to vote. Their courage laid the foundations for the first National Woman’s Day, celebrated in the United States in 1909.
The establishment of an International Women’s Day was first proposed at the International Women’s Conference in Copenhagen in 1910, when women from 17 countries collectively agreed to advocate for equal rights and suffrage for women. The subsequent year saw IWD commemorated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with over a million individuals campaigning for the right of women to work, vote, and hold public office.
Since those pioneering days, International Women’s Day has become a worldwide day of recognition and advocacy, celebrated across the globe. It is a call to action for gender equality and a reminder of the continuous fight for women’s rights.
